Yesterday, one of the other white kids called me a stupid animal when I wouldn't give him my apple (it was for Miss Charlotte, that's why). It hurt my feelings really badly. I was thinking about how even animals seem to have feelings and can get hurt. When I was little, Mama said that people who are mean to animals are bad people. Mama says that we should not be cruel to animals. I didn't get to tell Mama until later, first I told Miss Charlotte. Miss Charlotte told me that I was neither stupid nor an animal. She helped me stop crying. She said that I was a human being and that all human beings have souls. She said that my soul is what connects me to God and other people and that I should try to be a good person but that I should never forget that I am valuable. So, I am beginning a journal. I've never written one before, but my teacher Miss Charlotte says that it is soothing for the soul. She told me that many things can soothe the soul. I like Miss Charlotte a lot. She is so smart and nice and she she loves music, especially hymns, like me too. I think, if I grow up, I want to be like Miss Charlotte. Yeah, I think I do. I sometimes get into a lot of trouble for asking questions. But Miss Charlotte always answers all my questions. There was one question that I was afraid to ask her though:
I wonder if God knows that I have a soul?
