Dear Sojourner Truth,

I must say, listening to your speech during Ohio's Women Conference, I was struck by your grace and dignity. Never in my life have I encountered a negress who could be so elegant in her speech. I had always assumed that most were unable to express themselves in such a forceful and powerful manner. For the first time, I finally see the atrocity that is slavery. I never realized how painful your forced servitude must be. I was always taught to be believe that slavery was the natural state of being God intended for your people to be in, however, I am surprised by my new feelings sadness towards the state of the poor negroes. From the moment I returned home, I saw everything in new light. I feel as if I can truly emphasize with the negro plight and understand the pain of your people.

Like you, I feel as if I have been given a calling from God to do all I can to help the negroes since they unable to help themselves. I am quite pleased to admit that I have become a sort of abolitionist-in-training. I have already organized a small gathering of a few close friends who attended the conference along with me and share the same sentiments. We were able to have a lively discussion on the merits of slavery (all save for one concluding it was wrong) and how we should take the first steps in removing this immoral system. Although we have changed the world yet, I know that my small actions will make a difference. I would just like to extend my thanks to you for opening my eyes and allowing me to see the world as it truly is.

Yours Truly,

Mary Elizabeth Winters
